Hashtags Done Right: How to Target the Right Audience

Social media is a platform that plenty of people rely on these days to promote their business, whether it’s in the retail sense or just a brick and mortar sort of deal. The amount of traffic and potential customers you can find through the use of social media is crazy, and if you aren’t currently running a social media page, it’s in your best interests to do exactly that. In this piece, we’re going to be talking about something called “hashtags”. If you don’t know what those are, you’re in luck; I’m about to explain the entire situation in great detail (so get ready to read along!).

The only way to better your business, is through the use of better marketing platforms. In order to target the right people, you’ve got to be aware of who it is you’re targeting in the first place. Not only that, but it needs to be the proper demographic – if you’re selling skateboards, appealing towards the senior crowd isn’t going to warrant you any positive outcomes.

Take it from me – I’ve been through the blender known as social media marketing. There are billions of people on this planet, and most of them are using social media in their own little way; there is a very big opportunity to make some money through social media. Without dragging things along, I’m going to talk about how to find the right demographic – as well as how to identify the most effective hashtag for your marketing team to be using.

Why Even Use a Hashtag?
For most social medial platforms (like Twitter or even Instagram), there are things known as “hashtags”. These are little tags that follow the numeric/pound symbol (#), and allow people using these social media applications to filter out pictures they don’t want to see. If they search for the hashtag “#CoolShoes”, they’re going to be graced with plenty of pictures and posts related to sneakers. There are generic hashtags, and then there are specific ones – most specific hashtags relate to one even that’s currently being marketed on Twitter/social media as a whole at that particular moment.

Hashtags allow your posts to reach a broader audience, which in turn, will offer up more opportunities to convert sales (or reach whatever customer-based goal you happen to be gunning for). The more eyes on your posts, the better – it also helps promote a healthier sense of popularity. People are going to be willing to share your posts, and it may even result in some money being made. Hashtags aren’t just a secondary thought, they need to be properly thought out and planned meticulously.

Figuring Out the Proper Hashtag: Research
Do a bit of research beforehand in regards to your industry. If you’re looking to sell clothes, look at some of the more popular social media pages from clothing retailers. What are they focusing on? What kinds of posts are they making? Most importantly, though, which kinds of hashtags are they using? Try and build a sense for what you should be Tweeting or posting in general, before you attempt to post anything. One bad post could be enough to push consumers away, which means money coming out of your pocket.

If there’s a new product or event coming up associated with your industry, jump in on the hashtag! There are always trending hashtags that are much more popular than others, so it’s nice to look at those and see if any apply as well.

How to Use the Hashtag
Don’t spam social media platforms with a plethora of posts, try and maintain a consistent schedule. Some people may even be relying on you for new releases, such as sneakers or any other kind of retail product – if there’s a new product releasing, it always helps to build it up a few days beforehand (by using hashtags and social media).

Talk with your social media team and content curators, make sure that they work alongside one another to create posts that are going to be interactive and relevant. You want to keep yourself update in regards to news and other events that may be unfolding, as if it happened 24 hours ago, it’s technically “stale information” these days. You must be quick, and you’ve got to be strict/to the point! You have the ability to work hashtags like a true professional, it’s just a matter of learning the ropes before you can do so. Practice makes perfect! Just remember that.
